Darian Davis
December 17, 1990 - February 2, 2012

Darian Elizabeth Davis, 21, of Sharpsville, died Thursday, Feb. 2, 2012 in Howard County as the result of an automobile accident. She was born Dec. 17, 1990 in Kokomo to Troy and Ricque (Roberts) Davis.

Darian was an education major at Ivy Tech in Kokomo. She graduated from Tri-Central High School in 2009 and was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Tipton. She loved cheerleading, gymnastics and her pet dogs, but most of all her family, her fiancé Chad and her precious 7-month-old daughter, Berkeley. She was cheerful, full of love and life; a joy to those who loved her. She will be remembered by so many as one who encouraged others.

She is survived by her mother, Ricque Roberts and husband Kevin Adkinson of Sharpsville, her father Troy Davis, Tipton; daughter Berkeley Anne Boruff at home; fiancé Chad Boruff, Sharpsville; two brothers, Dylan Davis, of North Dakota, and Dalton Davis at home; grandmother Pat Shrock, of Greentown; a grandfather, Rick Roberts, Elkhart; a great-grandmother, Corene Lobeck, Kokomo; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Darian's funeral will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 7 at Young-Nichols Funeral Home with Rev. Leroy Kinnaman presiding. Burial will follow in Sharpsville Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2-8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home with a Rosary Service at 7:30.

Harry L. Dell
February 12, 1939 - January 26, 2012

Harry Dell ran to the arms of the love of his life and his high school sweetheart, Kozy Dell on the evening of January 26, 2012. He was born in Tipton County on February 12, 1939 to Clifford and Margaret (Lee) Dell who are both deceased.

Harry was a 1957 graduate of Tipton High School and was named the 1957 Athlete of the Year at Tipton. On August 18, 1957 Harry married his one true love, Kozy (Smith) Dell. Kozy left Harry on July 18, 2005 but they are now together.

Harry loved life, first and foremost he cherished his family and the time he spent with them. He always looked forward to the times when the kids and grandkids would drop by. Harry also enjoyed college sports with Notre Dame being his favorite, and he was an avid Oakland Raiders fan.

Harry spent 38 years at Chrysler in Kokomo prior to retiring in 2001. Soon after his retirement he went to work at the Tipton Senior Center as their shuttle van driver until December of 2011. Harry was a member of Saint John the Baptist Church in Tipton.

Survivors include his three daughters; Dayna and husband Charlie Ferguson of Tipton, Margie Hobbs of Peru, Ind., Mary and husband Terry Powers of Westfield, and a daughter in law Cathy Dell of Tipton. Harry had two sons who preceded him in death; Harry Dell Jr. and David Dell.

His grandchildren include; Eliza Ferguson (deceased), Alan Ferguson, Zack Ferguson both of Tipton, Lauren Dell of Clinton County, Drake Dell of Tipton, Jacob Boyd of Tipton, Derek Boyd of Tipton, Sam Ebert of Elwood, Ashley Powers of Noblesville, Stephanie Powers of Westfield, Jessika Powers of Westfield along with great-grandchildren; Noah Greene, Dylan “Macky” Boyd, Ethan Powers and a very special great grand daughter Olivia Wolverton.

Surviving siblings include; Billie Jo Cardwell of Tipton, Marketa “Donna” Whitaker of Ohio, Jerry and wife Karen Dell of Tipton with Norma Reeves, Leatrice Mishanic, Treva Dell, Alice Sego, Neita Reeder, Linda Fukumori, William Dell, Roy Dell, and Richard Dell all preceding Harry in death.

Other survivors include his in laws whom he stayed very close with after Kozy’s passing.

It was Harry’s request that no services be held. Interment will take place in St. John’s Cemetery at a later date. The family request that memorial contributions be made to the Encore Lifestyle and Enrichment Center located at 341 West Jefferson Street Suite C in Tipton.

Robert A. Deering
May 18, 1928 - January 24, 2012

Robert A. Deering, 83, of Tipton, died at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 24, 2012 at St. Vincent Heart Center in Carmel. He was born May 18, 1928 to Robert King and Martha Ellen (Cutler) Deering. He married Connie Fox and then later married Linda Lineback on May 18, 1985 and she survives.

Bob was the owner of Deering Cleaners in Tipton for many years. He had also owned an art studio in Atlanta and later the Arcadia Glass restaurant in Arcadia. Later in life Bob worked at the car wash in Tipton.

He was a graduate of Windfall High School, served on the Tipton City Park Board, was a Boy Scout leader, a member of the Tipton Elks Lodge and a Past Exalted Ruler. He enjoyed playing solitaire, finding time for it almost every day.

Survivors besides his wife Linda include children Steve Deering and wife Judy, Mission Viejo, California, Felecia Brennan and husband Pete, Burkesville, Kentucky, Jason Deering and wife Dawn, Atlanta, Gary Smith and wife Teri, Tipton, and Melissa Smith, Arcadia. Bob had 10 grandchildren, Drew Deering, Jessie Ullerich, Derrick Cloar, Telissa Carpenter, Matt Deering, Sunny Johnson, Misty Cowert, Levi Deering, Alycia Smith and Amy Smith.

He is also survived by 12 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild and his beloved dog Abby. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Julie Cloar.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 28, at Fairview Cemetery in Tipton with burial to follow. Young-Nichols Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Forrest "Eddie" Nash
March 28, 1910 - January 23, 2012

Forrest "Eddie" Nash, 101, of Tipton, died at 6:40 p.m. Monday, Jan. 23, 2012 at Miller's Merry Manor in Tipton. He was born March 28, 1910 in Tipton County to Lawrence and Jennie (Leavel) Nash. On July 3, 1931 he married Chloe Miller and she died on Sept. 18, 2006.

He was a 1929 graduate of Windfall High School and obtained a degree from Repperts School of Auctioneering. He worked as an Auctioneer and Real Estate Broker for 40 years.

Eddie was an Elder Emeritus of Windfall Christian Church and also served as Bible School Superintendent and youth director for several years. He was an Honorary Alumni of Johnson Bible College. Eddie also served on the Rainbow Christian Camp Board of Directors.

Eddie enjoyed race horses. He and Carl Scudder acquired "Cotton Prince", a colt from the Cotton Plantation that became the Indiana Horse of the Year in 1957. Later, Ralph Colbert and Eddie owned "Miss Windfall", the daughter of "Cotton Prince" who earned a place in the Standard Bred Hall of Fame in 1994.

He served as a medic in the U.S. Army at Headquarters Squadron X11 Tactical Air Command in the World War II European Theater. He was a 50-year member of Scottish Rite NM5 Valley of Indianapolis, 50-year member of Windfall Masonic Lodge No. 334 F&AM and a 50-year member of Order of the Eastern Star and was a past Worthy Patron. Eddie helped to organize Cub Scouting in Windfall and was a past president of the Windfall Lions Club.

He is survived by several nephews and nieces. Eddie had five brothers and one sister who all preceded him in death.

The funeral service will be at noon Friday, Jan. 27, at the Windfall Christian Church with Rev. Carl Roudebush presiding. Burial with military rites will follow in Brookside Cemetery, Windfall.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to noon at the church. Young-Nichols Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Helen L. Street
July 11, 1923 - January 20, 2012

Helen L. Street, age 88, passed away Friday, Jan. 20, 2012 at IU Health Tipton Hospital in Tipton, Indiana. She was born in Clarksville, Ind. on July 11, 1923 to Charles and Eva (Elmore) Johnson. Helen married John Street and he preceded her in death.

Helen was a florist and had worked at Daubies in New Albany before going to the floral department at Kroger’s in Bloomington, Ind. She was a 1941 graduate of Windfall High School and enjoyed crocheting, dancing and her cats.

Helen is survived by a sister Mary Eppelheimer of Tipton. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, a son John Street III, and a brother Howard Johnson.

Funeral services will be on held on Wednesday, Jan. 25, at the Porter Funeral Home in Tipton at 1 p.m. with the family gathering for a short visitation at 12:30 p.m.

Burial will be at the Stony Creek Cemetery in Hamilton County with Pastor Ken Mansfield officiating. Online condolences are available here.

 

Patrecia A. “Pat” Gieda
March 10, 1943 - January 19, 2012

Patrecia A. “Pat“ Gieda, age 68, passed away Thursday, Jan. 19, 2012 at Miller's Merry Manor, in Tipton, Indiana. She was born in Tipton County on March 10, 1943 to Omer M. and Anna Faye (Stout) Hendricks. Pat had married Adam Roberts and then later in her life she married Joseph Gieda.

Pat was a cook who had worked at various restaurants in and around Indiana. She attended schools in the Windfall area and enjoyed bingo, playing euchre, crocheting, and quilting.

Survivors include her children; Yolanda Heyde of Wabash, Michael Roberts of Macy, Ind., and Juanita Howard of Creston, Iowa.

Other survivors include her grandchildren; Heather Roberts, Rhea Roberts, Jerod Hyden, Benjamin Hyden, Kristina Howard, Aaron Howard, five great-grandchildren, three nephews; Tim Clouser of Tipton, Randy Clouser of Tipton, Mark Clouser of Georgia and a niece Jacqui Clouser of Nevada. Pat was also survived by a sister, Janet Clouser of Nevada. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and a son Joseph.

Juanita M. Ripberger
December 2, 1924 - January 19, 2012

Juanita M. Ripberger, 87, of Tipton, died at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 19, 2012 at Millers Merry Manor in Tipton. She was born in Kokomo on Dec. 2, 1924 to Ed and Margaret (Jung) Bendner. On Aug. 20, 1949 she married Bernard J. Ripberger and he preceded her in death.

She was a secretary for Prudential Life, and had worked for Sears and T-Way in retail services. Juanita belonged to St. John the Baptist Catholic Church and was a member of the Altar Rosary Society. She was a member of the Silver Bells Home-Ec Club, and the Tipton County Home Extension Makers. She also served on a Ration Board during WWII.

Survivors include four children, Jerry Ripberger, Creal Springs, Illinois; Jeff Ripberger, Indianapolis; Julianna Jerger, Wilmington, Delaware; and Jeannie Nixon, Bloomingdale, Georgia. She has five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Monday, Jan. 23, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Tipton with Rev. Leroy Kinnaman presiding. Burial will follow in St. John's Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 - 6 p.m. Sunday at Young-Nichols Funeral Home with a vigil and rosary service at 5 p.m.

Max Retherford
Jun 6, 1931 - January 17, 2012

Max Retherford, 80, of Windfall, died at 4:12 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 17, 2012 at Howard Regional Heath System in Kokomo. He was born in Windfall on June 6, 1931 to Carl and Alta (Shook) Retherford. On May 8, 2004 he married Shirley K. Coffey and she survives.

Max worked for Pioneer for 43 years and was a farmer. He was a member of the Windfall Christian Church and served over 30 years on the Windfall Town Board. He also loved to travel, hunt and trap. Max served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War.

Survivors besides his wife Shirley include two children, Barry
Retherford and wife Cathy, Galena, Ohio, and Jill Fiscus and husband Alan, Russiaville; one brother Rex Retherford and wife Patricia, Safety Harbor, Florida and one sister Janet Sowash, Converse; five grandsons Adam, Aaron, Ryan Retherford and Eric and Evan Fiscus.

Max was preceded in death by one brother Keith Retherford and a sister Geraldine Matchette.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 20, at Young-Nichols Funeral Home with Rev. Carl Roudebush presiding. Burial will follow in Brookside Cemetery, in Windfall, with military honors. Visitation will be from 4 - 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Carolyn J. Keown
April 11, 1935 - January 2012

Carolyn J. Keown, 76, of Windfall, died at 1:11 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 10, 2012 at St. Vincent Mercy Hospital in Elwood. She was born April 11, 1935 in Macon, Georgia to Marion and Lois Idale (Maddox) Howell. On January 21, 1956 Carolyn married Emmitt Donald Keown and he survives.

She was a homemaker and a member of the Southern Baptist Church. She loved her family and enjoyed being around her grandkids. She enjoyed Bingo, Wheel of Fortune, and loved to travel. She will be dearly missed, especially her beautiful smile.

Survivors besides her husband include five children, Lois I. Bastida, Idaho, Donald T. Keown, Florida, Kimberly D. Keown, Idaho, Mark D. Keown, Florida, and James E. Keown, Windfall; one brother, Bobby Howell, Atlanta, Georgia; nine grandchildren, Kristal, Jennifer, Alicia, Amanda, Bradley, Ashley, Chad, Cheyanne, and Cierra Keown and several great-grandchildren.

Carolyn was preceded in death by one son, Steven A. Keown; two brothers, Frank and Larry Howell.

Her funeral will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 14, at Young-Nichols Funeral Home in Tipton. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Charles H. Laurence
March 14, 1933 - January 9, 2012

Charles Henry Laurence, 78, of Kokomo, died at 1:20 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 9, 2012 at Miller's Merry Manor in Castleton. He was born March 14, 1933 in Mobile, Alabama to Henry Herbert and Rosamund Catherine (Steiner) Laurence. He had also lived in New Orleans; Pirmasens, Germany; El Paso, Texas and Clarksville, Tennessee. On April 11, 1964 he married Barbara Joyce Estock and she survives.

He was a retired Lt. Colonel in the U.S. Army, retiring in 1976 and he then retired as a psychiatric nurse in 1995. Charles served in the Army from 1956-1976 including during the Vietnam War. He was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Tipton, Knights of Columbus, 4th Degree and the Retired Officers Association, The Samaritan Caregivers of Kokomo, and Tipton Habitat for Humanity.

Survivors besides his wife include five children, John Laurence, Erie, CO; Matthew Laurence, Escondido, CA; Ann Sutton, Carmel; Thomas Laurence, San Diego, CA; and Catherine Weaver Fishers; one brother, Clement Laurence; two sisters, Viola Laurence and Mary Anne Laurence all of Birmingham AL; six grandchildren, Andrew Starrett, Aaron Starrett, Brandon Sutton, Hannah Laurence, Mathew Weaver and Colin Weaver. He was preceded in death by one son, Henry Laurence.

His funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 14, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church with Rev. Leroy Kinnaman presiding. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery where military honors will be performed. Visitation will be from 6 - 8 p.m. Friday at Young-Nichols Funeral Home with a Vigil service at 7 p.m.

Ruby Lucille Captain
August 7, 1924 - January 7, 2012

Ruby Lucille Captain, 87, of Tipton, died at 11:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 7, 2012 at Miller's Merry Manor. She was born August 7, 1924 in Jefferson Township, Tipton County, to Enoch & Grace (Helfer) Stafford.

On September 20, 1942 she married Roy A. Captain who preceded her in death on May 22, 1997. She was a wife, mother and homemaker. Ruby was a member of the West Street Christian Church.

Ruby is survived by three sons, Ronald G. Captain and wife Diane, The Woodlands, Texas, Michael C. Captain, Huntington, West Virginia, Steven K. Captain and wife Darlene, Noblesville; one sister, Enola Manifold, Indianapolis; seven grandchildren, Kristen (Captain) Streeter, Craig Captain, Kyle Captain, Catherine (Captain) Foster, Michelle (Captain) Stiles, Erin (Captain) London, and Daniel Captain; thirteen great-grandchildren, Collin Moitz, Courtney Moitz, Jackson Captain, Jillian Captain, Huck Captain, Tanner Foster, Grace Foster, Molly Stiles, Ben Captain, Chase London, Wayat London, Brogan London, and Amelia London; special friends, Lonnie Watson and his wife Carol, Tom Phifer, whom Ruby considered her fourth son, and his wife Susan.

She was proceeded in death by three brothers, Bernard M. Stafford, Burrell C. Stafford, and Cleon Bud Stafford; three sisters, Helen M. Woods, Anna Jane Foutch, and Edith M. Hunter.

There are no services planned. Burial will be at the Six Mile Church Cemetery, Bluffton, Indiana at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to the West Street Christian Church, 132 North West Street, Tipton, Indiana 46072.

Thelma Koors
May 22, 1914 - January 3, 2012

Thelma Koors, 97, of Tipton, died at 9:40 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2012 at Millers Merry Manor in Tipton. She was born May 22, 1914 in Howard County to Walter C. and Estella M. (Henry) Powell.

On Oct. 20, 1932 she married Paul J. Koors who preceded her in death on April 26, 2001. She worked at the St. Joseph Center in Tipton. Thelma was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church and the Altar Rosary Society.

Thelma is survived by three children, Martha M. Fisher and husband Duane, Phoenix, Arizona, Maurice B. Koors and wife Sondra (deceased), Talbott, Tennessee, Marita E. Off and husband Herbie (deceased), Tipton; a daughter in law, Thais Koors, Harrison, Ohio; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews

She was also preceded in death by one son, Clarence R. Koors and his wife Bonnie; four brothers and one sister.

Her funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 7, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church with Rev. Leroy Kinnaman presiding. Burial will be in St. John's Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 - 8 p.m. Friday at Young-Nichols Funeral Home with a Rosary service at 4 p.m. and a Vigal service at 7 p.m.
